Donnels Homers Twice, Lions Rout Pepperdine to Take Series
LMU defeated the Waves 14-5 to take a WCC and PCH Cup series on Sunday..
Senior Tanner Donnels belted a pair of homers, including one in a 10-run fifth inning, as LMU (13-10, 4-2 WCC) recorded a 14-5 rout of PCH Cup and WCC-rival Pepperdine (12-13, 2-4 WCC) on Sunday at Pepperdine's Eddy D. Field Stadium. The victory handed LMU the series win and 1.5 points in the PCH Cup standings. The road series win was the first for the Lions since the 2005 season, and the series victory was the second in as many years for LMU.
Donnels finished the game 4-for-4 with four runs scored, two homers, a hit-by-pitch and three RBI. The multi-homer game was the first for the Lions since Colton Plaia homered twice against Santa Clara on May 17, 2013. The round-trippers were the fourth and fifth of the season for Donnels.
The Lions twice had the bases loaded with nobody out, but after failing to score in the third, they cashed in on 10 runs in the fifth to take a 12-4 lead headed to the bottom of the inning. After Donnels homered to start the fifth, Billy Wilson delivered another big blow, lacing a bases-clearing three-RBI triple into the left centerfield gap. Two runs later, and hitting with the bases loaded once again, Jamey Smart came up with a two-RBI single before coming around to score on a two-RBI double off the bat of Ryan Erickson to cap the scoring run.
Sophomore Austin Miller also collected four hits in the victory, going 4-for-5 with two runs scored, a double and an RBI out of the leadoff spot. Miller scored the first run of the game in the first inning, reaching with a bunt single and coming in to score on an RBI-single from David Edwards. Jimmy Jack made it 2-0 LMU later in the inning, lifting a run-scoring fly ball to centerfield to bring home Donnels who had reached with a four-pitch walk earlier in the frame.
Carrying momentum from escaping a bases-loaded no out jam in the third, Pepperdine scored three times in the bottom of the third, including two on a two-run homer from Hutton Moyer, and one more in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead headed into the fifth.
Moyer finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. A.J. Puckett, who got the start for Pepperdine and pitched into the lopsided fifth inning, took the loss after allowing eight runs on 10 hits and four walks over 4.0+ frames. The decision dropped him to 2-4 on the season.
Junior Trevor Megill took over for the Lions in the fourth inning, tossing four frames and allowing two runs on three hits and four walks with four strikeouts to improve to 2-2 after benefitting from the Lion offensive outpouring.
Donnels' second homer of the game came in the two-run ninth inning as LMU tacked on a pair of additional runs to close the series. Kyle Dozier provided the final punch of the day for LMU, driving a pinch-hit RBI-double into the left centerfield gap to score Chris Barnett.
LMU will return to action on Tuesday when it hosts UCSB at 6 p.m. The Lions will play five home games next week, hosting Hawaii on Wednesday before opening a three-game series with Gonzaga over the weekend.
