The LMU baseball program (15-9, 5-1 WCC) was unable to record the sweep of #17 San Diego (15-8, 4-2 WCC) on Sunday, falling by a count of 8-1 to snap a six-game win streak. Despite the loss, LMU has won 13 of its last 15 games overall.
The Lions couldn't seem to solve senior left-hander Louie Lechich, who tossed 8.1 innings, allowing one run on seven hits and a walk while striking out four to improve to 5-1. Junior Tanner Donnels was the only player to get to Lechich consistently, finishing 3-for-3 with a run scored. Donnels scored LMU's lone run in the second inning, coming in to score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Cole Trezek.
Left-hander Sean Buckle got the start and took the loss for LMU, surrendering three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out three, falling to 1-3 with the decision. LMU used seven pitchers on Sunday, as the seven combined to walk nine Torero batters and hit two. Tim Peabody and Brandon Horth highlighted the relief efforts, combining for three shutout innings of work.
Connor Joe, Andrew Daniel and Josh Goossen-Brown each drew a pair of walks hitting in the first three spots of the order for USD, with Joe and Goossen-Brown scoring twice. Goossen-Brown went 1-for-3 with his fourth home run of the year before finishing the game on the hill for USD with 0.2 scoreless innings.
Goossen-Brown's solo shot in the third proved to be the game-winner, as it broke a 1-1 tie. The Toreros went on to score once more in the third before tacking on three in the seventh and two more in the eighth to blow the game open.
LMU will return to action on Tuesday when it hosts USC at 6 pm. The Lions dropped the first game of the season against the Trojans on March 11 by a score of 6-1.
