Miller Hits First Career Homer, Burckle Notches First Career Hit

A pair of firsts highlighted an 18-4 loss to #13 UCSB on Tuesday at Page Stadium as sophomore Austin Miller belted his first career home run as part of a 3-for-4 day with two runs scored, and freshman Kent Burckle posted a 3-for-4 night with a double for his first career hits. The Lions dropped to 13-11 overall with the loss while #13 UCSB improved to 17-6.

The Gauchos scored 18 runs on 20 hits in the victory, including scoring 10 times in the fourth inning. Cameron Newell and Ryan Clark each posted three hits, with Clark going 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored and three RBI. Newell finished with a double, two runs scored and three RBI, while Peter Maris also notched three RBI to accompany a pair of hits. Austin Bush and Dalton Kelly both homered for UCSB, with Bush's two-run blast, the first of his career, coming in a pinch-hit opportunity in the four-run top of the ninth.

Junior right-hander Connor Baits got the start for the Gauchos in a staff day, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks to record the victory and improve to 1-0. Freshman Cory Abbott started for LMU and went three innings, surrendering four runs on five hits and one walk, before being tagged with the loss and falling to 0-1.

In other firsts for the Lions, junior Tyler Knight made his first career appearance on the mound, while Tim Peabody appeared in his first game of the season in relief.

LMU will return to action on Wednesday when it hosts Hawaii at 6 p.m.
