SPOKANE, Wash. - The LMU baseball program (16-11, 6-2 WCC) evened a three-game West Coast Conference series with Gonzaga (10-15, 6-2 WCC) by way of a 2-0 shutout victory on Saturday night in game two of a doubleheader played at the Patterson Baseball Complex. Senior Patrick McGrath blanked the Bulldogs over the first 6.1 innings, allowing just five hits and two walks while striking out four, before Carlos Fuentes and Bret Dahlson combined to pitch the final 2.2 scoreless frames.
With the victory, McGrath improved to 4-0 on the season. Dahlson pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning, recording his third save of the year and the 21st of his career. He is now one short of the LMU program record held by Darryl Scott. Fuentes entered the seventh inning with two on and one out, inducing an inning-ending double play to end the threat and preserve the 2-0 Lion lead.
The Lions got on the board first in the fourth inning when David Edwards doubled with one out and moved to third on a single from Cole Trezek. He came in to score one play later when Jimmy Jack lifted a sacrifice fly down the left field line that proved just deep enough to score the run.
A one-out double proved crucial once again for the Lions in the sixth as Tanner Donnels posted a two-bagger and came in to score on a clutch two-out single from Trezek. Trezek finished the game 2-for-3.
Freshman right-hander Brandon Bailey got the start and went the distance for Gonzaga, tossing 9.0 innings in a losing effort, allowing two runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out five. The loss moved Bailey to 2-4 on the year.
LMU will look to take the series tomorrow when the two teams play a decisive game three at Noon.
