Busfield’s Gem Gives LMU Game One

Junior J.D. Busfield tossed 8.0 strong innings on Friday night, as LMU (12-14, 4-3 WCC) earned a 7-2 victory over San Diego (15-13, 3-4 WCC) in game one of a three-game West Coast Conference series being played at Fowler Park.

Busfield allowed just two runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts, with both runs scoring in the ninth inning as he pursued a complete-game shutout. The right-hander allowed the first three hitters to reach with hits in the ninth, forcing in a run and breaking up the shutout bid, before ultimately being tagged with one final tally. Freshman right-hander Mark Finkelnburg got the first out of the ninth before fellow freshman, Codie Paiva, closed out the Toreros, who stranded the bases loaded.

With the victory, Busfield moved to 2-2 on the year, picking up his fifth consecutive quality start along the way.

LMU got to left-handed starter, Troy Conyers, early on Friday night, tagging the southpaw for a run in the second and five more in the third. Sean Watkins homered with two out in the second inning to put the Lions on the board, before LMU picked Conyers apart with five runs on five singles and an error in the third. Junior Austin Miller, who finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, had one of four RBI-singles in that third inning. Spencer Erdman, who went 2-for-3 hitting out of the ninth spot in the order, singled and scored in the third, coming around on a Phil Caulfield RBI-single.



Conyers, who allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits and three walks over 6.0 innings, took the loss and fell to 4-3 on the year.

Leading 6-0 headed to the seventh, LMU got its final run on a solo homer from Cassidy Brown. The round-tripper, Brown’s fifth of the year, came off reliever Taylor Kaczmarek.

LMU will look to take the series tomorrow when Cory Abbott takes the mound opposed by Gary Cornish. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
