Saint Mary's Defeats LMU, 3-2
April 6, 2002 Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's baseball team (11-15/4-4 WCC) dropped Loyola Marymount (13-19/6-4 WCC) for the second straight day winning 3-2, on Saturday, April 6 on Louis Gusto Field. Starting pitcher Kevin Trochez, went the distance giving up two runs on six hits and recorded one strikeout. The Game was scoreless until the top of the fourth when freshman Sean Smith sacrificed senior Kris Zacuto on a fly ball to right field to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. Zacuto reached base on Trochez's only walk of the day. The Gaels would retaliate in the bottom of the fifth. John Engers began the attack with a single to left field. Mike Sansoe and Mike Harris would then follow with singles as well, Harris would collect two RBI on his hit as both Engers and Sansoe scored to give the Gaels a 2-1 advantage. The Lions tied it up in the top of the eighth inning as sophomore Jonathan Higashi began the rally with a one out double down the right field line. Freshman Joe Frazee then scored Higashi on a hit to center that got passed Jason Waugh who just missed a diving grab. With the hit Frazee stretched his hitting streak to 15 games. With the score 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth, Brett Wayne led off with a single to right center. Waugh then followed with a single, advancing Wayne to second. After two pitching changes, Tim Spooner tallied the game-winning RBI on a bloop single to right field. Trochez then finished off what he started to give him his second complete game of the season. His record now improves to 3-3 on the season. Receiving the loss for the Lions was junior Justin Abreu, who's record drops to 3-2 after going seven strong innings.
The teams will complete the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
