Win Streak Snapped at Eight Games

Looking to extend its win streak to nine games on Friday, LMU (19-11, 7-3 WCC) fell behind early en route to dropping a 10-3 decision to Santa Clara (7-22, 3-5 WCC) from Page Stadium.

The Broncos scored four times in the first inning, taking advantage of a pair of Lion errors, and never looked back. Three of the four first-inning runs went unearned on the ledger of right-hander Blake Redman, who went 7.0 innings and allowed seven runs (four earned) on six hits and one walk with three strikeouts before being charged with the loss and falling to 3-5.

John Cresto led the way offensively for Santa Clara, going 2-for-5 with two runs scored, a double, his sixth homer of the year, and four RBI. Evan Haberle also had a good night for the Broncos, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBI. The Broncos scored the four in the first, one in the third, two in the fourth and three in the eighth.

LMU could not figure out spot-starter Brandon Buckley, as the freshman allowed just one hit with two strikeouts over the first 3.0 innings of work in his first career start. Scheduled starter Eric Lex went the rest of the way, allowing three unearned runs, all coming in the seventh, on five hits and three walks while striking out seven. For his efforts, Lex was credited with the win and moved to 2-5.

Junior Jamey Smart was the lone Lion to finish with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Brandon Shearer and, Trevin Esquerra and Jimmy Hill all drove in a run in the seventh, as the Lions scored the three unearned runs on three hits and an error.



LMU will look to even the series on Saturday when it sends left-hander Brenton Arriaga to the mound at 6 p.m.
