LMU (19-14) swept the season series with Long Beach State (15-16) by way of an 8-2 victory on Tuesday night from Blair Field in Long Beach, Calif. The Lions received a great combined pitching performance, holding the Dirtbags to just two runs on six hits, while the offense exploded for eight runs on 11 hits.

Carlos Fuentes got the start and went three innings, allowing two hits and a run while striking out two. Long Beach State got the on the board first with a run in the third inning on an RBI-groundout from Ino Patron, but LMU turned the ball over to freshman Brenton Arriaga in the fourth, who held Long Beach to just one run over the next five frames. Arriaga allowed just three hits over the five innings, keeping the Dirtbags at bay as LMU's offense went to work for eight runs to catapult him to a victory that moved him to 2-2 on the year. Freshman Tyler Cohen pitched the ninth inning, striking out one to seal the victory.

The Lions got even at one run apiece in the fifth on one swing of the bat from David Edwards. Edwards belted his first homer of the year down the line in right field, highlighting a 2-for-4 night with two RBI and a run scored.

The Lions broke the 1-1 tie with four runs in the sixth inning, scoring the four runs on four hits. Cassidy Brown led the inning off with a walk before a single from Cohen and a bunt single from Austin Miller loaded the bases. David Fletcher wasted no time driving in the run, lacing the first pitch he saw into left field to bring home Brown. Tommy Cheek followed with his nation-leading ninth sacrifice fly to make it 3-1 LMU before Tanner Donnels capped the scoring run with a two-RBI single into centerfield.

Fletcher finished the game 4-for-5 with two runs scored, a double and an RBI. It was his fourth-straight multi-hit game, and the second four-hit game in the last four. He is now hitting .619 (13-for-21) with seven runs scored, three doubles and four RBI over a five-game hitting streak.

Leading 5-1, LMU added three more insurance runs in the eighth inning. Miller reached on a hit-by-pitch before a Fletcher double put runners at second and third. A wild pitch scored the first run before Donnels lifted a sacrifice fly, LMU's second of the night, to centerfield to drive in his third run of the game. Cole Trezek got the rally started once again on the ensuing play, lacing a single into right field to extend his hitting streak to 11 games and setting the table for Edwards' two-out RBI-double to left centerfield.

Long Beach State managed to scratch a run across in the home half of the eighth when pinch-hitter Zack Rivera lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home Patron, but the run was too little and too late as LMU closed the door on the Dirtbags in the ninth.

The Lions return to West Coast Conference play this weekend when they welcome Saint Mary's to Page Stadium for a three-game series on Friday at 6 pm.
