LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The LMU baseball team (24-27, 12-12 WCC) finished up the 2013 season with a 5-4 loss to Santa Clara (14-39, 1-23 WCC) on Sunday at LMU's Page Stadium. The Lions honored 10 seniors prior to the game, including Joey Boney, Steve Duenas, Matt Florer, Zac Fujimoto, Aaron Griffin, Justin Grijalva, Matt Lowenstein, Cullen Mahoney, Sean McIntyre and Colton Plaia.

Junior Kevin Garcia had a stellar final game of the season, going 2-for-2 with two RBI out of the eighth spot in the order. David Edwards also had two hits, finishing 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Sophomore Brandon Horth got the start and lasted four innings, allowing one run on one hit and a walk while striking out four. Senior Florer took the loss in relief, allowing two runs on two hits and a walk over 1.1 innings. The loss dropped Florer to 2-4 on the year.

Chris Mendoza got the victory as a reliever for Santa Clara, tossing five innings and allowing only one run on four hits and three walks to improve to 3-2. Tommy Nance earned the save, his second, after tossing the final 1.2 innings and allowing just one hit and two walks.

The Lions pushed a two-out run across in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 1-0 deficit as sophomore David Edwards put a bunt down the third base line and beat the throw to first. A walk to Plaia followed before the two runners executed a double-steal. The throw from catcher Zach Looney to third base sailed over the head of third baseman Drew Ozanne, allowing Edwards to scamper home with the run.

LMU had a solid opportunity to add to its lead in the third, receiving a one-out triple from Edwards, but Plaia flew out to shallow right field before Chris Mendoza struck out Cole Trezek on three pitches to retire the side and escape the jam.

Santa Clara got back to even in the top of the fourth inning, executing a double steal with men at the corners and one out. Zach Looney got things started with a single before a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch moved the runner to third. A hit-by-pitch followed, setting the table for Santa Clara to steal the equalizer.

The Lions wasted no time getting the run back in the fourth as Fujimoto shot a double into the left centerfield gap and came around to score on a pair of sacrifice bunts, capped by a suicide squeeze from Kevin Garcia to run the tally to 2-1.

Santa Clara broke out for three runs in the sixth inning to claim a 4-2 lead headed into the bottom of the sixth. A Looney single was followed by a walk and a hit-by-pitch to load the bases with one out before D. Ozanne cleared the bases with a double inside the bag at third base that rolled all the way into the left field corner.

The Broncos extended the lead to 5-2 with a run in the top of the seventh after receiving a leadoff walk to Looney. Casey Munoz followed with a bunt that was fielded but thrown away by Carlos Fuentes, allowing the runners to move to second and third. With the infield drawn in on the grass, Matt Ozanne dumped a single off his fists behind third base to bring home the run.

LMU managed to cut the deficit to one run at 5-4 in the bottom of the eighth, scoring a pair of runs on a RBI-groundout from Chris Barnett and a two-out RBI-single from Kevin Garcia. Trailing by one, LMU put the winning run aboard in the bottom of the ninth with two out, but sophomore Tanner Donnels grounded out sharply to second base to end the game.

With the loss, LMU finished sixth in the WCC standings.
