SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Junior Colton Plaia went 4-for-5 with two RBI to guide LMU (26-26, 13-9 WCC) to a 6-3 victory over Santa Clara (25-27, 4-18 WCC) in game one of a three-game West Coast Conference series on Friday at Santa Clara's Stephen Schott Stadium.
LMU trailed 2-0 headed into the third inning, but scored twice in the third to even the tally at 2-2. After a RBI-groundout from Alex Guthrie scored the first run of the inning, Plaia contributed a two-out RBI-single into left field to send home the equalizer.
The Lions rallied for four runs in the fifth en route to a 6-2 lead and never looked back. Tommy Vance, who took the loss and fell to 4-6 after allowing six runs over 4.1 innings, struggled to stay in the strike zone in the fifth, walking a pair and hitting two Lion batters to set the table for the big frame. Plaia, Shon Roe and freshman Mitchell Esser each contributed RBI-singles, while the fourth run scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch from Vance.
Freshman Colin Welmon got the start and earned the victory for LMU, tossing six innings and allowing three runs on seven hits to improve to 7-4. The right-hander struck out four batters before handing the ball over to Aaron Griffin in the seventh. Griffin dealt the final three scoreless frames, inducing a pair of double plays, to claim his first save of the year.
LMU and Santa Clara will continue the three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
