Lions Outdueled by Gonzaga, Face Elimination Tonight
LMU dropped a 3-1 decision to Gonzaga on Friday afternoon.
Playing in a winner's bracket game against top-seeded Gonzaga, LMU (38-17) was outdueled, 3-1, by the Bulldogs (33-18) and their starter, Justin Vernia, on Friday afternoon from Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton, Calif.
With the loss, LMU now faces an elimination game against BYU tonight at 8 p.m. LMU beat BYU, 3-2, on Thursday night.
Vernia tossed 6.2 scoreless innings and allowed just three hits and one walk with five strikeouts to pick up the win and move to 7-3 on the season. On the other side of the ball, LMU's Cory Abbott dealt 7.0 innings, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks with 11 strikeouts. The WCC Pitcher of the Year took the loss and fell to 11-2 on the year.
Senior right-hander Wyatt Mills earned his 12th save of the year for Gonzaga, logging the final 2.1 innings and allowing one run on only one hit - a solo homer from Billy Wilson in the eighth that accounted for LMU's lone run.
Gonzaga got on the board first in the fourth inning as Abbott struggled with his command in the inning, walking two and hitting one to load the bases. Jeff Bohling made the most of the opportunity, lofting a sacrifice fly to right field to push the run across.
The Bulldogs extended the lead to 3-0 by way of two runs in the eighth as Tyler Frost delivered an RBI-triple to bring home Troy Johnston. Justin Jacobs followed with another sacrifice fly, capping the scoring run.
LMU will look to keep its WCC Tournament Championship hopes alive tonight at 8 p.m. when it plays as the visitor against BYU.
