Abbott, Paiva Named WCC All-Tournament

May 28, 2017

Following play at the 2017 WCC Championship Tournament in which BYU claimed the WCC's automatic bid, LMU pitchers Cory Abbott and Codie Paiva were named to the All-Tournament team.

Abbott, the WCC Pitcher of the Year, got the start in LMU's second game at the tournament against Gonzaga. The right-hander dealt 7.0 innings, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks with 11 strikeouts, but was outdueled in the game en route to taking the loss and dropping to 11-2 on the season.

Paiva appeared in LMU's victory over BYU on Thursday night, inheriting two runners with only one out from starter Brenton Arriaga in the sixth inning. After issuing a pair of walks in that frame, he managed to get out of the inning and keep a one-run advantage at 3-2. Paiva settled in nicely down the stretch, logging the final 3.2 scoreless innings while striking out two to convert his fifth save of the season.

LMU will now await the announcement of the NCAA Tournament field on Monday at 9 a.m. PT. The selections will air live on ESPN2. LMU last made a regional appearance in 2000 – the last time that LMU had won a WCC Championship prior to this season.
