Fifteen current Lion baseball players are competing in summer leagues around the country this summer, while nine former Lions are currently active in professional baseball, including C.J. Wilson (Los Angeles Angels) and Ryan Wheeler (Colorado Rockies) who have competed in Major League Baseball.

FORMER LION SPOTLIGHT
Jason Wheeler (2009-11) began the year at Class-A Fort Myers before recently being promoted to AA New Britain as a member of the Minnesota Twins farm system. Wheeler, who pitches to former teammate Matt Koch (2008-11) at the AA level, has amassed a 2-2 record and a 3.33 ERA over four starts for the Rock Cats since the call-up. The 6'6" lefty has struck out 15 hitters over 24.1 innings of work so far, including tossing six-plus inning in all four of his starts. Prior to the promotion, Wheeler was 6-5 with a 2.51 ERA over 13 starts and 79 innings in the Florida State League, striking out 57 batters while walking only 19. Over three minor league seasons, the native of Torrance, Calif. has gone 31-17 with a 3.35 ERA over 70 starts.

 

 

CURRENT LION SPOTLIGHT
A Freshman All-American, and the reigning WCC Defensive Player of the Year, David Fletcher is currently catching fire in the Cape Cod League while playing for the Orleans Firebirds. The right-hand hitting shortstop sports a .276 batting average with 16 runs scored, three doubles and seven RBI for the summer, but has hit safely in nine straight games stretching from June 25 to July 7. Over that span, the native of Cypress, Calif. has batted .342 (13-for-38) with 10 runs scored and four RBI.
