The LMU baseball team was well represented on summer baseball league All-Star teams this year, as five returning Lions and one incoming freshman earned All-Star nods. The Alaska League All-Stars saw five of the six, as Kevin Garcia, Carlos Fuentes and Sean Buckle represented the south, while David Edwards and incoming freshman, David Fletcher, represented the north. Brandon Horth, who spent his summer playing for the Klamath Falls Gems of the West Coast League, earned the start in the WCL All-Star game for the south.
On the offensive side of the ball, Edwards, who is teamed with Fletcher on the Alaska Goldpanners, currently leads the ABL with five home runs, teaming that mark with nine doubles, 21 runs scored and 17 RBI. Fletcher, a native of Cypress, Calif, currently leads the ABL in stolen bases with 20 to accompany four doubles, a triple, 17 runs scored and 14 RBI, helping the Goldpanners to the ABL regular season title. Garcia, who is playing for the Anchorage Glacier Pilots, has recorded 14 runs scored, two doubles and 11 RBI en route to being named the Bernie Kosinski Team MVP.
Highlighting the pitching staff, Horth has accumulated a 4-1 record with a 1.63 ERA over 10 appearances and nine starts so far this summer. The left-hander has struck out 49 hitters in 55 innings of work. Buckle, who is joined by Fuentes on the Glacier Pilots, has pitched to a stellar 1.00 ERA and a 3-2 record over seven starts and 36 innings of work, striking out 22 hitters over that span. Fuentes has also kept his ERA low this summer, tossing 41 innings over seven starts and posting a 2.19 mark. The righty has notched a 1-2 record with 35 strikeouts to only 13 walks.
