LOS ANGELES - Page Stadium and Sullivan Field - home to LMU Baseball and LMU Soccer - have been given a night-time face lift thanks to a state-of-the-art lighting system. The brand new Musco Lighting system installed this summer will allow the three programs that call them home to play games at night starting this 2013-14 season.
"The addition of the lights to Page Stadium and Sullivan Field is another step to creating an environment that allows our student-athletes to practice and compete in a first-rate facility," said Athletics Director Dr. William Husak. "It also provides an exciting venue for students and fans, especially families, to come and cheer for the Lions. There are many donors who have contributed toward making the lights a reality and for their generosity, our Athletics program and LMU are very grateful."
The first night game in an outdoor venue for the Lions will take place on Saturday, Aug. 24 when LMU men's soccer will host Cal State Northridge in an exhibition game on Sullivan Field at 7 pm.
"We have been anxiously awaiting this moment and are very excited for the program to now have the opportunity to play night games in Los Angeles," Men's Soccer Head Coach Paul Krumpe said. "Being able to offer night games during the week to our fans in the community and students on campus will help us draw a larger crowd and produce a greater home-field advantage for our players."
The first regular season game to be played under the lights will be men's soccer taking on Florida International on Friday, Aug. 30 at 7 pm. Women's soccer will have their first night game will be Friday, Sept. 20 at 7 pm.
"This is an exciting day for us," said Women's Soccer Head Coach Michelle Myers. "Just watching the poles go up already makes you feel like you're in a true soccer environment. The lights allow us to bring in bigger crowds and create an enhanced game-day atmosphere for players and fans."
LMU baseball will also be under the lights for their 2014 season. The first game under the lights will be in February.
"This project was a long time coming for our program, and we are extremely excited to have the opportunity to schedule night games at Page Stadium," Baseball Head Coach Jason Gill said. "The lights are going to help us across the board, not only with the recruitment and development of our players , but also by bringing our community together and providing them with an evening entertainment option for the entire family. This is yet another big step toward making our LMU baseball program a national contender.""
The lights where installed as part of the LMU 20-year Master Plan approved a year ago.
"The Musco lighting system is truly state of the art," said Husak. "It creates a bright playing surface while keeping the light spillage outside the playing surface to a minimum. The vibrancy and vitality generated by evening games will create a special environment for the campus and Southern California communities."
