High School:
Johnson attended North Salinas High School for his first two years before transferring to Palma High School last year. The season prior to his arrival, Palma went 6-17 overall and 0-9 in Tri-County league play in 2004-05. In his first season he led Palma to a second place finish in the league at 8-3, going 21-6 overall. He averaged 19 points and 12 rebounds as a junior, earning first team all-league honors. He then led Palma to their sixth CCS Division IV crown with 23 points and 12 rebounds in a 61-47 win over Menlo. He led the Chieftains to a 27-3 record and the Northern California semifinals. He finished his high school career by dropping 32 points in the Third Annual Hoops by the Bay All-Star game. En route to a 27-3 record, the Chieftains had a 19-game winning streak, going undefeated in the Tri-County Athletic League and winning a Central Coast Section Division IV title, the school's first since 1999. He was named the Monterey County Player of the Year and first-team All-County as he averaged 25 points and 12 rebounds per game. In two seasons at North Salinas he helped them pull off the biggest upset in the playoffs with an overtime win over Palo Alto in the quarterfinals of the Central Coast Section playoffs in 2004. He was a second-team all-league performer as a freshman and then a first-team selection as a sophomore. He averaged double figures all four years. Johnson was also a football standout for three seasons, earning all-league honors as a junior. He did not play as a senior.
