NON-CONFERENCE... Opened the season earning 2009 Grizzly Classic All-Tournament team honors after averaging 14.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 2.3 steals in the three games. WCC TOURNEY: finished leading the team with 19.7 points with 5.7 rebounds in three tourney games, shooting 51.5 percent from the field and 76.7 percent from the charity stripe... eased memory of last year's tournament performance with a gem in leading Lions to win over Pepperdine, scoring 27 points with six rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal...continued stellar play with 18 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals in 37 minutes...had 14 points with two assists and four rebounds in 38 minutes against Gonzaga, hitting 8-for-10 from charity stripe... a 64.8 percent free throw shooter in his career, he is 48-for-62 from the free throw line (77.4 percent) in his last eight games heading.
IN 2008-09... He ranked fifth in the WCC overall in scoring and tied for seventh in assists. Also averaged 5.7 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game, both second for the Lions' and ranked 12th and tied for fourth in the WCC, respectively. Finished scoring 234 points in 16 games, good for a team-high 14.6 points per contest... added 5.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.56 steals per contest... opened season averaging 19.3 points per game in Iowa State tournament... scored career-best 23 against UC Davis... had career-high 13 boards against ISU... limited minutes against No. 8 Notre Dame due to injured foot. He will miss 4 to 6 weeks after learning the foot was broken... played first game in two months against Portland and scored 12 points in 20 minutes... played 30 minutes against #23 Gonzaga, scoring 12 points with four rebounds and two assists... had 20 points in 31 minutes against Santa Clara... played 31 minutes against USF with 16 points and nine rebounds and just one turnover... scored 17 points with eight rebounds, all offensive, adding two assists and three steals against Pepperdine... had near triple double against San Diego, going for 21 points, nine rebounds and assists in win... hit 6-for-7 from free throw line... went for 18 points, seven rebounds, eight assists and four steals against Santa Clara... hit 6-for-7 from free throw line... played first career 40 minute game, fifth player this season on the roster to play a complete game... scored 13 points against Gonzaga and then went for 18 against Portland... scored eight points with three assists and a steal off the bench in win over USF... led Lions with 14 points and eight rebounds against SMC... hit 8-for-12 from the charity stripe, adding three assists and three steals.
PRIOR TO LMU... Teel went to Long Island University for one season where he did not play. He then transferred to Chipola. While at the junior college in Marianna, Fla., Teel helped the team to a No. 2 national ranking in the NJCAA and helped them win the Florida State Championship and earn a bid to the NJCAA National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas.
HIGH SCHOOL... The 6-4 Teel, a native of Jamaica, New York, averaged 35.7 points, 11.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 4.0 steals per game as a senior at Flushing (NY) High School. He was named the IS8 Most Valuable Player, was an ABCD Camp All Star and a McDonald's All-America nominee. He left as Flushing High's all-time leading scorer and the NYS leading scorer. He finished his career as a three-time all-state and a three-time all-conference winner.
PERSONAL... Vernon Lamont Teel was born in South Side, New York on July 6, 1987... he is the son of Allyn Teel... has a brother and three sisters... a Sociology major.
