LOS ANGELES – For the second time in as many games, Loyola Marymount outscored their opponent in the second half. Unfortunately for the Lions (6-13, 1-7 WCC), the result was the same as Thursday, as Portland’s (8-13, 2-6 WCC) halftime lead was too large to overcome.

The Lions came out in the second half with three points on each of their opening two possessions. After a defensive stop on one end, Mattias Markusson converted an and-1 at the rim. The next time down the court, Jeffery McClendon knocked down a triple. LMU opened on an 13-5 run to open the second half after trailing by a dozen, 39-27, at the break.

Donald Gipson brought Hank’s House to life with his transition dunk that made it a 46-44 game.

Portland built up their largest lead of the game, going up 63-50, before Steven Haney, Jr. hit his first three of the game.

LMU didn’t quit, going on a 12-3 run into the final minute, cutting the deficit to 66-62, before Portland closed it out.

The only Lion lead came on Gipson’s opening basket. Portland jumped out of the gate to an 11-4 start, causing LMU to take a timeout. The Lions responded with six of the next eight to make it a 13-10 game.

Markusson recorded his second double-double of the season, grabbing 11 boards to go along with his 13 points.

Eli Scott continued to be a headache for opposing teams on the glass. Of the freshman’s seven rebounds, five came on the offensive glass.

Scott finished with 17 points, one off James Batemon’s team-high 18. Jeffery McClendon tied his career-high with a game-high five assists.

The Lions shift their focus to Thursday’s PCH Cup. LMU will travel up the coast to Malibu to play the 3-17 Pepperdine Waves who are the lone 0-8 team in West Coast Conference play.
