SAN FRANCISCO – Mattias Markusson had a career-night, recording his fifth double-double of the season, in Saturday’s loss to University of San Francisco. Loyola Marymount erased a nine-point second-half deficit, but could not grab the late, falling to USF, 72-63.

Coming out of the locker room, LMU cut the deficit to three points, but the Dons built it back up to as large as nine, 41-32. The Lions responded with a 11-2 run to tie it at 43-all and kept USF without a field goal for over three and a half minutes during that stretch.

Tied at 47-all, USF went on a 8-0 run to build their lead back before James Batemon stopped the run with a pair of free throws. Batemon scored 13 of his game-high 18 points in the final 20 minutes of play.

LMU started the game with a pair of threes from Jeffery McClendon then Erik Johansson to open 2-for-2 and take a 6-5 lead. Johansson’s triple was the start of a 7-0 run that doubled up the Lions over the Dons, 10-5 four minutes into the action.

In total eight first half lead changes kept the game tight before USF went on a 6-0 run to build their largest lead. A Markusson dunk in the final seconds stopped the run and made it a 29-25 USF lead at the half. The sophomore finished with a career-high 17 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.

Eli Scott joined Batemon and Markusson in double-digits with 11 points to go along with his eight rebounds.

One final week of West Coast Conference play continues before the conference tournament at the Orleans in Las Vegas. LMU travels to Santa Clara on Thursday night then wraps up the regular season and hosts Pacific on Saturday, Feb. 24. The 1 p.m. game will include a special Senior Day recognition for Steven Haney, Jr.
