No. 19 Gonzaga Too Much For Lions
Feb. 19, 2009 Spokane, WA - The Loyola Marymount men's basketball team fell to the 19th-ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs, 91-54, at the McCarthy Center in Spokane, Wash., Thursday night. It was the first game of a two-game road trip for the Lions, the final trip of the regular season. Vernon Teel and Kevin Young led the Lions with 13 points each while freshmen Jarred DuBois and LaRon Armstead added nine and eight points, respectively. Brad Sweezy led the Lions on the boards with eight while Armstead added seven. Steven Gray came off the bench to lead all scorers with 23 points. "Their size and our lack of depth under the basket was a big factor," said Head Coach Max Good. "They jumped on us early and we are just not at the point to where we can fight back against a team as good as Gonzaga. They really showed their depth." The Zags outrebounded the Lions 44-31 and finished shooting 50.8 percent from the field, including an 11-for-21 (52.4 percent) clip from the three-point line. Gray hit five of the three-poitners for Gonzaga. DuBois added nine points to his total to move to 355 on the season, 14 behind Bill Donovan for fourth on the freshman scoring list. Young added to his all-time freshman record total with four rebounds, giving him 191. Young also made a move on the all-time steals list with four on the night, giving him 44 on the year. The total ties him with Damian Martin for the all-time freshman record. In addition, Armstead moved his rebound total to 140, ranking him fifth, moving past Forrest McKenzie. The Lions wrap-up the two-game trip at Portland on Saturday night at 7 p.m. The game can be heard on KXLU 88.9 FM and LMULions.com.
