Box Score

Los Angeles, CA - After a week off to focus on finals heading into the holiday break, Loyola Marymount men's basketball were into the giving spirit a little too much as they committed 22 turnovers, leading to an 81-61 setback at UC Santa Barbara on Saturday night at the Thunderdome.

LMU received a little extra help as freshman Ashley Hamilton played for the first time in four games, scoring eight points with three rebounds. Leading the way for the Lions was LaRon Armstead with 16 points and seven rebounds. Corey Counts added 14 points and Jarred DuBois had 10.

However, the game was decided by turnovers. UCSB had 14 extra possessions and 11 points off LMU turnovers. LMU created 15 turnovers on eight steals of their own, scoring eight points off those turnovers.

"It is just frustrating. We come off a game where we have just eight turnovers against a very good and aggressive Wyoming then come out tonight and just don't value the basketball," said Acting Head Coach Max Good. "They are bewildered right now. They are giving us all they have and they come from winning programs. They aren't use to this."

The Lions went a game for the first time since Arkansas-Little Rock without a player going all 40 minutes. Armstead was given a rest for the first time in 108 minutes and finished 7-for-8 from the free throw line and 4-for-5 from the field.

"We got down in the second half and then we were being over aggressive and busted on some assignments," said Good. "We showed some better patience on offense but you have to do it on both ends of the floor."

The busted assignments led to UCSB hitting 17-for-28 in the second half (60.7 percent) to finish 30-for-64 (46.9 percent) from the field on the game. LMU went 20-for-50 on the game and hit 15-for-21 from the charity stripe (71.4 percent).

Freshman Kevin Young had a solid game, going for six points, nine rebounds, three assists, three blocks and four steals after playing just four minutes in the first half due to foul trouble. He played all 20 minutes in the second half.

LMU will have little time to rest as they will host UC Riverside on Monday at 7 p.m. The game will be on KXLU 88.9 FM and can be watched live through Lions All-Access on LMULions.com.
