MORAGA, Calif. – It was a tale of hot and cold shooting to start the West Coast Conference season on Saturday night as Saint Mary’s topped Loyola Marymount, 87-59.
SMC (12-2, 1-0 WCC) opened the game 7-for-9 from three while LMU (5-7, 0-1 WCC) shot 1-for-11 in the opening half. The Lions showed a response after the break, with the second half going in favor of the home team, 43-41.
Saint Mary’s hit three threes to open the game, jumping out to a 9-0 lead. The deficit grew to 11-0 before Eli Scott put LMU on the board.
SMC scored 16 of the game’s first 18 points before Scott added an and-1 at the 13:40 mark of the first half.
Scott accounted for LMU’s first seven points, but SMC’s hot start from three grew the home lead to 30-7. The Lions went on a 5-0 run from that point, capped by James Batemon’s three.
The Gael’s held LMU to a season-low 18 first-half points on 6-for-26 (23.1 percent) shooting before intermission.
Donald Gipson opened the second-half with a knock-down three on the first possession, as LMU outscored the Gaels through the first 13 minutes after the break.
Markusson scored all 11 of his points in the second half, going five-for-six from the field after taking just on shot in the opening 20 minutes.
Scott added 13 points to lead the Lions and Batemon added 10 of his own.
