Season Closes With Another Pushback
Like they have all season, the LMU men's basketball team pushed back to the very end, once again giving BYU everything they could handle until the final buzzer. However, another late-game push wasn't enough as the Lions see their season end, 89-81, on Saturday afternoon in the first quarterfinal of the 2017 West Coast Conference Championships at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.

LMU split their two conference games last week. The Lions earned a last-second win over San Francisco as Jeffery McClendon knocked down all three of his free throws with 0.8 on the clock to erase the USF lead and win by two. The week was nearly perfect as the 17-point deficit in San Diego was cut to just one point before the Toreros closed things out with a four-point victory.

Three players are averaging 13.5 points per game or better through six conference games this season. James Batemon is coming off a 30-point game, Steven Haney, Jr. has recorded four games of 17 or more points in his rst six WCC games of his senior year, and Eli Scott is has recorded a trio of 14 and 7 games as a true freshman early in his conference career.

Thursday’s game will feature three of the West Coast Conference’s top four scorers. Batemon leads the Lions with 17.5 points per game this season, and BYU has a pair in the top three. Yoeli Childs is scoring 17.9 points per game and Elijah Bryant is averaging 17.7 per contest.

The Lions still rank atop the WCC in two statistical categories. LMU’s 14.65 turnovers forced per game and 13.06 offensive rebounds per game are both a league-best.
