LMU earned the win Friday in the tournament’s first round after erasing a halftime deficit for the third straight game. Down 15 in the first half, LMU held Portland to just 30 points in the second half, the low of any Division I opponent faced this year.
“Now that the butterflies are over, we can focus on those things that are basketball-related,” said Head Coach Mike Dunlap. “It’s a heck of an opportunity. You want to be in these situations. (We need to) take care of the ball, rebound, shoot well and find a way to take good shots.’’
The Lions did take care of the ball against the Pilots, making it two-consecutive games with a season-low six turnovers in the 78-72 win, and did not allow a single fast break point.
James Batemon led all scorers in Friday’s two first round games with his 29 points. The attack was ballanced, as LMU totalled five players in double-figures (Batemon, Cameron Allen, Mattias Markusson, Eli Scott, and Zafir Williams) for the first time since Feb. 27, 2016.
No. 7 Gonzaga enters as LMU’s highest-ranked opponent this season. The Lions will look to take down a ranked opponent for the first time since 2012.
