Southern California Standouts Join Men's Hoops
April 16, 2009
Los Angeles, CA - Quincy Lawson of Vista High School and Alex Osborne of Pacific Hills High School signed National Letters of Intent to join the LMU Men's Basketball program, head coach Max Good announced on Thursday (April 16). The two southern California standouts give the Lions' an impressive four-man incoming class for the 2009-10 season. "We are very excited to have Quincy and Alex join our program this coming fall," said Head Coach Max Good of what is officially his first signing class. "They are both very athletic and skilled players. But what stands out to me the most is their willingness to work and do the little things to not only make themselves better, but to make their team better. They will have an opportunity to make a contribution to this team as soon as their freshman year." The 6-6 Lawson led Vista (from North County of San Diego) with 22.7 points, 7.4 rebounds, 4.5 blocks, 2.0 steals and 1.7 assists per game to earn first-team All-CIF San Diego section honors. On the season he had seven games with 30 or more points, including a career-best 38 in the final game of the regular season. He led team to a 23-7 overall record as a senior, advancing to the second round of the CIF San Diego Division I playoffs. Lawson, a MaxPreps Top-100 player and ranked No. 37 by ESPN at the small forward position, had 17 points, six rebounds and five blocked shots in Vista's first round playoff win over Grossmont. "Quincy really had an outstanding senior season," said Good. "Starting with his play over the summer and into his high school season, he really showed to be a rising talent. He is very active around the basket and uses his long arms very well in the paint." Lawson, whose brother plays for Creighton, helped Vista to a 7-3 finish in the Palomar League. He led the conference in scoring, was second in blocks, third in rebounds and third in steals. As a junior, Lawson averaged 16.3 points and 7.3 rebounds while the year prior as a sophomore he averaged 11.3 points and 6.3 rebounds.
A multi-sport athlete, Lawson placed second with a record 21-feet in the long jump at the Avocado League Track Finals as a junior. He advanced to the CIF San Diego Section prelims, placing 14th. In the triple jump, he placed third in the Avocado League Finals and advanced to the CIF San Diego Section. He advanced all the way to the CIF State Championships thanks to a record 45-feet, 2-inches in the CIF-SDS Finals. He went on to place 23rd in state. As for Osborne, a 6-7 power forward, he averaged 16.3 points, 9.8 rebounds, 1.9 blocks, 1.7 assists and 1.3 steals for Pacific Hills in Los Angeles. He helped the Bruins to a 28-7 overall record and a 9-1 mark in Alpha League play. Osborne finished ranked third in the league in scoring, third in blocks, and second in rebounds. In his senior season, Osborne went for a career-best 31 points and 13 rebounds in an 83-81 win over Woodcrest Christian on Feb. 27. His career-high of 19 rebounds came in a 72-51 win over Birmingham on Dec. 27. "Alex gives us some much needed size. He has a very solid body frame with long arms," said Good. "Alex, like Quincy, continues to get better. He has already developed into a strong rebounder and his competitiveness and basketball intelligence is very impressive. His basketball IQ is very strong for a young player." As a junior, Osborne averaged 12.8 points and 8.9 rebounds in helping Pacific Hills go 19-12. In his sophomore season he averaged 13.3 points and 4.0 rebounds for the Bruins, who went 23-9 in the 2006-07 season. As a freshman he averaged 7.0 points and 5.6 rebounds. Osborne had a busy fall. In addition to playing and excelling at hoops, he was one of 13 seniors from Pacific Hills to volunteer at a polling place during this past November's election. He served as the Baldwin Hills polling place that served his precinct. Lawson and Osborne join incoming freshman Given Kalipinde from Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virg., and Edgar Garibay from Compton High School in Compton. Kalipinde had a busy senior season, earning Player of the Year honors in Virginia for leading his boys' soccer team to the state title while also earning second-team All-Metro honors in Washington D.C. area for basketball. Garibay played the past year for a prep school in Las Vegas. "This incoming class, combined with the youth that we already have in place on this team, will hopefully give us the talent to very competitive this coming year and many years to come," said Good. "This group has the work ethic necessary to develop into contenders." |
