LOS ANGELES -- Loyola Marymount men's basketball coach Mike Dunlap has agreed to a contract extension through 2021. Dunlap has increased his win total in his first three seasons back at his alma mater, and has finished higher in the conference standings in each of those seasons.
"Gaining stability in the leadership of our men's basketball program is crucial for its long-term success," said Director of Athletics Dr. William Husak. "Mike has proven in his three years that he can build the program by recruiting highly skilled athletes, coach them into a cohesive unit and begin to have the type of success we all hope to see at LMU. This extension will give him the opportunity to build a championship program characterized by athletes who during their time at LMU graduate, experience personal growth while playing an exciting winning brand of basketball."
The Lions went 15-15 in 2016-17 and 8-10 in conference to finish top-six in the West Coast Conference Standings. Last season's .500 win record was LMU's first at that mark since 2012, even with five of the team's losses totaling nine points.
"We are honored to continue building the Lions' legacy. #LIONSTRONG" said Dunlap.
Under Dunlap's lead, LMU has had four all-WCC performers and four named to the conference's all-academic teams in three seasons.
The 2017-18 team will have several new faces following the changeover from last season's five-member senior class. LMU has added four true freshman and three transfers to compete with returners Donald Gipson, Steven Haney, Jr., Petr Herman, Erik Johansson, Mattias Markusson, and Jeffery McClendon.
Monday marks 100 days out from the first game of the season, with the full schedule and season ticket information scheduled to be released in the coming weeks.
