Lions open on the road at BYU, Saint Mary's; Finish with Cougars.
Aug. 9, 2012
LOS ANGELES - The West Coast Conference announced on Thursday (Aug. 9) the 2013 WCC men's basketball schedule and LMU will open conference play on the road, facing BYU on Jan. 3 followed by defending WCC champion Saint Mary's on Jan. 5.
"Well, we will get a feel of where our young team is right away," said Head Coach Max Good. "Those two road games last year were a pair of our statement wins and I am sure that our return will be ones they have circled on their calendars."
LMU will begin 2013 with four of their first six games on the road, similar to the start they had in 2012. The Lions played five of their first seven on the road, winning all five of those to start 5-2 in the WCC. The Lions knocked off both BYU and ranked Saint Mary's on the road in 2012, and finished with a 7-1 road record in the WCC a year ago.
"We played very well on the road last year, and in conference it is what helped us to our 11 conference wins," said Good, who led the Lions to their best conference record, 11-5, since the 1989-90 team. "We have a much younger team this coming year, and this will be quite the test."
The Lions will play their first home games of WCC play when they host Santa Clara on Jan. 10 and Portland on Jan. 12. They will then head back on the road where they will face San Diego on Jan. 17 and San Francisco on Jan. 19.
LMU will close the first half of conference play with the first Wells Fargo PCH Cup showdown with Pepperdine at Gersten Pavilion on Thursday, Jan. 24, followed a week later by WCC power Gonzaga on Jan. 31.
"With BYU in their second year and every other team getting better each and every year, conference play is a beast," said Good. "The key is to hold court at home and find away to get wins on the road. This is going to be quite the season in the WCC."
The second half of WCC play begins on a Monday when the Lions host San Diego on Feb. 4. They will then head away from home on a three-game road swing, starting with the Pacific Northwest trip. They will face Portland on Feb. 7 followed by the Bulldogs on Feb. 9.
The road trip will end with the Wells Fargo PCH Cup finale as the Lions head to Malibu to face the Waves on Feb. 14.
Two days later the Lions will be back home for Family Weekend as the Lions host the defending champion Gaels on Saturday, Feb. 16. The Lions will then host San Francisco on Thursday, Feb. 21 before heading out the weekend of Feb. 23-24 for a trip to an opponent in the SEARS BracketBusters presented by ESPN. The opponent and date will be set in late January 2013.
LMU will play their final road game of WCC play when they travel to Santa Clara on Thursday Feb. 28, followed by the regular season finale at Gersten Pavilion on March 2 against BYU.
The Zappos.com WCC Basketball Championships will be held March 6-11 at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
