All About the Hoops in Madrid
Men's basketball gets to know Madrid, but day all about basketball thanks to visit with Team USA.
Aug. 19, 2010
MADRID - Staying in Europe's fourth largest city, LMU men's basketball had the opportunity to explore some of the region's richest history, including a visit to The Prado, a 213-year old museum with a collection of nearly 4,000 of Europe's greatest galleries while in their third day of their international trip to Spain.
Despite the beauty and history of Madrid, in the end, the day was about basketball for the 16 college players and traveling party, who got to meet some of the world's greatest players.
As part of their tour, the Lions were able to visit with Team USA as they too are in Spain, playing exhibition games in preparation for the 2010 World Championships held in Turkey Aug. 28 - Sept. 12.
"It was a great opportunity for our players to see some of the best players and coaches in the world," said Head Coach Max Good. "We were so honored to be able to watch them practice and then meet the players after. It was a great experience."
The Lions watched the last hour of practice and then spent the next hour meeting the 13 players and coaches. All 13 players represent NBA teams and include: Chauncey Billups (Denver Nuggets), Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City Thunder), Derrick Rose (Chicago Bulls), Rajon Rondo (Boston Celtics), Rudy Gay (Memphis Grizzlies), Andre Iguodala (Philadelphia 76ers), Danny Granger (Indiana Pacers), Kevin Love (Minnesota Timberwolves), Lamar Odom (Los Angeles Lakers), Tyson Chandler (Dallas Mavericks), Eric Gordon (Los Angeles Clippers), Russell Westbrook (Oklahoma City Thunder) and Stephen Curry (Golden State Warriors).
In addition, the Lions were able to meet Team USA Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski (Head Coach of Duke), Assistant Coaches Jim Boeheim (Head Coach of Syracuse), Nate McMillian (Head Coach Portland Trail Blazers) and Jay Triano (Toronto Raptors), along with USA Basketball Chairman Jerry Colangelo and advance scout Tony Ronzone (Minnesota Timberwolves).

Following the visit with Team USA, the Lions hit the court themselves with a practice in preparation for the first game of the trip, which will be held at 8 p.m. (local time), on Thursday, Aug. 19. The Lions will play the first of three straight games, taking on Asta Gestion Fuenlabrada EBA at El Arroyo, which is where they practiced on Wednesday.
The game will follow a day of touring the city of Toledo, which is often described as the "soul of Spain."
