Lions Announce 2013-14 Schedule
Longest WCC schedule in history will dominate 2013-14 season.
Aug 20, 2013
LOS ANGELES - The largest conference schedule in LMU men's basketball history has been set thanks to the release of the 2013-14 West Coast Conference men's basketball schedule on Tuesday. With 10 teams, the schedule will be contested over 10 weeks in a double round robin format, culminating on the first day of March 2014.
A year ago, the Lions opened on the road with BYU. This year's slate will have the Cougars coming to Gersten Pavilion to start the conference season on Saturday, Dec. 28. It will be part of the opening weekend for the Lions as they will host San Diego on Monday, Dec. 30.
The grueling conference slate will come after a tough non-conference schedule that has been set-up to get the Lions ready for the WCC.
"Our schedule is once again set-up to help us be successful for the West Coast Conference," said Head Coach Max Good. "We are playing some very, very good programs in a variety of situations - on the road, in tough neutral conditions, and at home. And then looking at the WCC this year, with two conference champions thanks to Pacific moving over after winning the Big West last year - its going to be quite the battle."
The 2013-14 season will begin with the annual exhibition game as the Lions take on Cal Lutheran on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m. The regular season will begin with a trip to San Diego for a two-day tournament hosted by the Toreros. The Lions will face Grand Canyon on Friday, Nov. 8 and then will take on South Dakota State the following day.
"This tournament will be a great chance for us to get the season started and is a great partnership with San Diego," said Good. "We will then partner with them in 2014-15 and host a similar tournament at our place."
The Lions will also play in the 2013 Ezbons Virgin Islands Paradise Jam, taking on Northern Iowa on the opening day, Friday, Nov. 22. The tournament will run through Monday, Nov. 25.
Smashed in-between the two tournaments is a trip to Long Beach State on Nov. 14 and then the home opener against Northern Arizona on Sunday, Nov. 17.
The trip to the Virgin Islands starts a stretch of six games away from home. After returning from the tournament, the Lions will travel to UC Riverside (Dec. 2), Pittsburgh (Dec. 6) and the ESPN BracketBusters return game with Valparaiso (Dec. 14).
They will return for a four-game home stand that will begin with the other BracketBusters return game with Cal Poly at Gersten Pavilion, Dec. 17. They will then host La Sierra in the third annual LMU Holiday Classic on Dec. 21 with tickets free to the public.
The home stand ends with the first two conference games.
LMU will then spend the next four on the road, including two more against the Cougars and Toreros in the first three weeks of the season, traveling to San Diego (Jan. 9) and BYU (Jan. 11) to end the road swing. It begins with the first Bay Area trip, taking on San Francisco (Jan. 2) and Santa Clara (Jan. 4) to open 2014.
The Lions return home for Portland (Jan. 16) and Gonzaga (Jan. 18) before going on another three-game road swing, taking on Pacific (Jan. 23), Saint Mary's (Jan. 25) and Pepperdine (Feb. 1) as the season reaches the final month.
LMU will close with five of their last seven at home, taking on Saint Mary's (Feb. 6) and Pacific (Feb. 8) for the second time in 10 days to start the final month. LMU will head to Portland (Feb. 13) and Gonzaga (Feb. 15) for the final road swing. They will end with three at home, taking on Pepperdine (Feb. 20), Santa Clara (Feb. 27) and San Francisco (Mar. 1).
The 2014 West Coast Conference Basketball Championships will take place from March 6-11 at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
