LOS ANGELES-- Head Coach Max Good announced that seniors Ayodeji Egbeyemi and Godwin Okonji will miss an indefinite portion of the 2013-14 season due to injuries suffered in an automobile accident while heading to practice around 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20. Both players were admitted to Marina Hospital shortly before 8 a.m. and were released later that afternoon.
"We are very thankful that both Godwin and Ayodeji are doing well and were able to come home following the accident," said Good. "While they are doing well, both suffered various levels of injuries that will take time to heal. In talking with our doctors, we feel Ayodeji should be back soon, while we will have to wait and see on the condition of Godwin. He suffered injuries to his left leg that will require further examination from his doctors. At this time, we are just thankful that they are with us."
The accident occurred at the corner of W. Manchester Avenue and McConnell Avenue. Associate Head Coach Myke Scholl arrived at the scene shortly after the accident. He commented that paramedics and local police were called to tend to Okonji and Egbeyemi as well as the driver of the other car. Egbeyemi, who was driving, had his car totaled in the accident. Scholl also stated that the other driver was cited by authorities at the scene.
"With the amount of driving youth do today, we have been very fortunate to not have a single fender bender, let alone an accident of this nature," said Scholl. "Both Godwin and Ayodeji suffered bumps and bruises and will take some time to heal. We are fortunate we were able to get them to the hospital quickly, get them care and back home that day."
"This team and University, is a family. Some thing like this accident is a part of life and will bring our team closer," said Good. "We are very proud of each of our guys and how they handle themselves. We have a very good support system here at LMU and within athletics."
