Offense Struggles at No. 22 SMC
Junior Petr Herman connected on his first two shots and senior Brandon Brown hit a three as LMU men’s basketball looked to be in an early offensive rhythm. From there the lid went on the basket as the Lions struggled to score in a 81-48 setback to 22nd-ranked Saint Mary’s on Thursday night.

The Gaels (11-2, 0-0 WCC) had another strong non-conference season, leading to 11 votes in the latest USA Today Coaches Poll released on Monday. SMC is led by the combination of senior Jock Landale and his ve-consecutive double-doubles and Emmett Naar, the nation’s leader in assists with 119 on the year.

Naar’s control of the game has led SMC to the nation’s best assist-to-turnover ratio (2.02), with the Gaels allowing just 8.5 turnovers per game, the lowest in Division I men’s basketball.

LMU will look to combat that in rebounding margin, speci cally by keeping possessions alive on the offensive glass. The Lions rank sixth in the country averaging 15.0 offensive rebounds per game. Among the NCAA individual leaders in that category are Eli Scott who ranks 44th with his 3.18 offensive boards per game and Zafir Williams who ranks 78th after collecting 2.82 of- fesive rebounds per contest.

The Lions come into the game trying to end an 11-game losing streak to Saint Mary’s and open WCC play on the right note. Following the game, the focus will then shift to Saturday’s opponent, Pacific, who open Thursday at top-20 Gonzaga.
