Former LMU golfer Mike Gaines joined the Loyola Marymount men's golf team as a volunteer assistant coach for former teammate Alex Galvan in 2005. He is in his seventh season with the Lions.

A business major that graduated in 1980, Gaines played four seasons for former coach Fr. Thomas Higgins. While with the Lions, LMU never finished worse than fourth in the WCC Championship. Gaines went on to graduate school at UCLA, graduating in 1983 with an MBA.

Gaines then joined Deloitte & Touche in 1983 and worked there for eight years, moving up to manager level when he left in 1991. He joined Hughes Electronics and retired as the Chief Financial Officer in 2004. Hughes, the parent company of DirecTV and former defense contractor, called the current University Hall on the LMU campus home. Gaines had his office in University Hall for five years.

Gaines' ties to LMU do not stop there. His relationship with his former coach continued as Higgins married Gaines to his wife, Lisa. Fr. Higgins also has baptized the couples' three children.
