INDUSTRY HILLS, Caif. -- LMU men's golf saved their best for last as they posted the fourth best round of the entire tournament among the nine-team field to finish in third place at the Folino Men's Invitational hosted at Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms in Industry Hills, Calif., on Tuesday.
Junior Tyler Torano finished in a three-way tie for first place, his third first place finish of his career. Travis Russell of UC Irvine won the individual title on the third hole of a playoff with Torano and Sacramento State's Ryan Williams after all three finished at 2-under-par for the tournament.
Torano posted a final round at even par, hitting a 72 to go with his career-best 67 on Monday. Torano finished the tournament with 13 birdies, tied with Williams for the best of the field. He also was among the best on par-5 scoring, going six-under for the tournament.
The Lions finished the final round with a 294, giving them a final score of 895. The Lions jumped over host Cal State Fullerton and Sacramento State on the final day. LMU finished two strokes better than the Titans and 11 better than Sac. State. Long Beach State posted round of 289 on Monday and Tuesday to win for the second straight year. They finished with a final score of 872.
As a team, the Lions played consistent golf throughout the final day. Joining Torano with a score of even par was freshman Connor Campbell, whose score of 72 was a personal best in his young career. He finished in a tie for 24th.
The other three Lions posted scores of 75, including senior Bryan Bergna who finished 16th with a final score of 226. Senior Boris Stantchev finished tied with Campbell at 24th with a 230. Rounding out the Lions' scoring was senior Eduardo Chavez at 233.
LMU continues a busy February with the Del Walker Invitational on Feb. 25-26 at Virginia Country Club.
