STOCKTON, Calif. – Riley Elmes sunk six birdies and finished 3-under on Tuesday to jump 13 positions in the NCAA Men’s Golf Stockton Regional. The Loyola Marymount junior followed up his opening round 72 with a second-round 69 to finish the day in a four-way tie for 14th.

“Riley had the flat stick working today, making six birdies on his way to a 69,” said Assistant Coach Rory DeWan, who is working with Elmes throughout the regional. “It was a solid round and has him in contention leading into the third round.”

Birdies were the Round 2 specialty for Elmes. He collected three birdies on both the front and back nine, including three of four holes between 3 and 6 and three consecutive birdies on 11, 12, and 13.

Elmes is shooting 1-under on Par 4 holes for the tournament and much of his movement can be credited to Par 5 holes, where he is shooting 4-under.

Elmes is seven strokes off the leader, Stanford’s Brandon Wu (67-67—134) who matched his first day output with a second 67 in the second round. On the team side, Alabama (282-280—562) shot a team-best 8-under Tuesday to jump into a tie for the lead with Iowa State (278-284—562).

“He's going to need another low round tomorrow to keep his post-season alive,” said DeWan. “His game is in top form, he is up to the challenge.”

The final round will be played Wednesday morning and will determine those who will advance to the National Tournament in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Five teams and one individual will advance to the NCAA Championships from each regional site. Elmes will begin his round with a 9:53 a.m. tee off from the first hole.
