Elmes Finishes Regional at 3-Under, LMU’s Best Since ‘07

STOCKTON, Calif. – In his first NCAA Regional Tournament, Loyola Marymount Junior Riley Elmes finished in a tie for 16thin the 75 player field. Elmes matched his opening round 72 on Wednesday to give him a three-day total of 72-69-72—213. Of the individuals competing, Elmes finished tied for fourth.


“Getting the opportunity to play in the postseason is always a special experience,” said Assistant Coach Rory DeWan, who was working with Elmes throughout the regional.

“Riley did not have his best stuff this week, but was still able to finish in 16th place in a great field. Although he did not achieve his goals this week, he still had an outstanding year.”


After playing the majority of the front nine at 1-over, Elmes sunk birdies on 11 and 16 to help himself return to even for the day.


Elmes finishes his junior season with a 71.33 stroke average, LMU’s second-best all-time, surpassing his sophomore season’s 71.33. Only Brian Locke’s 71.00 in 2006-07 tops Elmes in the program record books.


The team champions are Kansas, who finished at 20-under with their 281-282-281—844. The five teams to advance to the NCAA Championships in Stillwater, Okla. are Kansas, Stanford (285-283-277—845), Iowa State (278-284-285—847), Alabama (282-280-287—849) and Oregon (289-283-280—852).


Oregon’s Norman Xiong (68-67-66—201) won the individual title after surging to the top of the leaderboard with his 6-under performance on Wednesday to put him at 15-under for the tournament.

Charles Corner of Texas El Paso will advance as the highest individual after tying for third with his 69-69-69—207.


In LMU’s NCAA Regional history, the only individual to finish further under par was Brian Locke in 2007 with his 13-under, 69-67-67—203 performance to tie him for seventh.


The year prior, when the Lions earned a team bid to the 2006 NCAA West Regional, Locke (70-67-69—206) shot 10-under to tie for fifth and Jason D’Amore (74-68-69—211) tied for 29thwith his 5-under showing.
