Auburn, WA (Sept. 26) - With a final round of 70, including an eagle on the par-5 17, sophomore Brian Locke finished the 2006 Opus NW Husky Invitational in a tie for fifth place with a four-under 212. He helped the Lions post a final round score of 296 on Tuesday as they finish in sixth place overall with an 886 at the Washington National Golf Club in Auburn, Wash.
The Lions finished 22-over par against the nine-team field, finishing a stroke better than San Diego State, five better than Oregon State and 10 better than Oregon. UCLA ran away with the win at nine-under while host Washington finished even par.
As for Locke, he claimed his sixth career top-five finish and 10th career top-20 finish with a four-under 212. After opening day rounds of 69 and 73, Locke posted a final round of 70 thanks to his first eagle of the season. He posted a two-over par 34 on the front nine on Tuesday, including a pair of double bogeys. However, he erased all of that with two birdies and the eagle to go four-under on the back nine to get back into the top five.
Junior Jason D'Amore and sophomore Louie Bergna came in second and third for the Lions with scores of 224. Bergna shot a final round 75 and D'Amore a 76 as they place in a tie for 36th. Junior Josh Escobedo followed with a 75 in the final round for a 226. He placed in a tie for 42nd.
Sophomore Joe Stassi was also in action this week, playing as an individual at the Mustang Invitational hosted by the Masters College. Stassi finished in fifth place at the 36-hole tournament on Monday, shooting a two-round score of 146. He shot an even par 72 on the first day at Angeles National Golf Club in Sunland, Calif. He followed with a 74 in the second round for his best two rounds as a Lion.
The Lions will have a month before their next action when the travel to the Santa Clara Fall Invitational on Oct. 23-24 in San Jose, Calif. The tournament will be at Silver Valley Creek C.C.
