LOS ANGELES – The first tournament of the 2017-18 season is in the books as Loyola Marymount men’s golf finished in a three-way tie for 10th at Mark Simpson Colorado Invite. The Lions shot 1-under in the final round to finish the tournament at 292-288-287—867.

LMU had a pair of finishers in the top-25, with both Riley Elmes (78-70-67—215) and Cameron Meeks (73-71-71—215) finishing a stroke under par. Elmes’ 67 on Tuesday was tied for the second-best third round, with only individual champion, Utah’s Kyler Dunkie (70-68-64—202), shooting a lower final round.

“Nice to see Riley finish well with a 67,” said Head Coach Jason D’Amore. “I think his final two rounds built some momentum for next week. Cam Meeks was very steady and impressive for his first event. Next week’s course will suit his game a little more. Overall as a team it was not our best performance. We’ll learn from it and prepare better to have a great showing at Fresno State”

In addition to Elmes and Meeks tying for 24th, Mason Glinski (69-74-77—220) and Justin Egelske (73-73-74—220) also finished with the same number on their scorecards. Glinski and Egelske tied for 57th in the field of 107.

Matthew Carungay finished three-over with a 77-74-75—226.

Utah and Colorado both finished play at 22-under par, forcing a tie-breaker. The teams both played 18, counting 4-of-5, one time. Utah's Dunkle and Schow birdied and Costello, Tomlinson and Mandur got pars. Colorado's Souza and O'Loughlin got pars, Macdonald bogeyed and Bjorlow and Painton conceded, giving Utah the team title.

As a team, LMU totaled 54 birdies, the second-most of the tournament.

LMU returns to play in a week with the Nick Watney Invitational hosted by Fresno State. The two-day tournament will be played at Sunnyside Country Club from Oct 2-3.
