NCAA Release: NCAA schools recognized for academic performance

LMU golf, men's water polo and swimming were lauded for their Academic Progress Rate (APR) on Wednesday, earning NCAA Public Recognition Awards for multiyear APR scores that rank among the top-10 percent nationally in their respective sports.

Over the course of the 13 years that Public Recognition Awards have been distributed, women's swimming has earned the honor nine times (2004-05, 2009-10 through 2016-17), while men's golf has been named four times (2009-10 through 2011-12, 2016-17). This is the first selection for men's water polo.

This year marks the second straight year that LMU has had three teams earn Public Recognition Awards. The LMU athletics department posted its most NCAA Public Recognition Award recipients in 2011-12, claiming five. Overall, LMU has had 11 teams receive public recognition a total of 30 times.

The Academic Progress Rate is a real-time measure of eligibility and retention of student-athletes competing on every Division I sports team. The most recent APR scores are based on a multi-year rate that averages scores from the 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 academic years.

The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams nationally. The scores required to be in the top-10 and earn a Public Recognition Award ranged from 985 to a perfect 1,000, depending on the sport, and 1,188 teams from across the nation earned perfect APR scores.

Overall, more than 1,200 NCAA Division I sports teams were recognized for outstanding performance in the classroom. The 1,284 teams publicly recognized for high achievement include 827 women's teams and 457 men's or mixed squads.

APR scores for all Division I teams will be released May 23. All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for postseason in their respective sports and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
