Arizona carded a 15-under 273 Friday to take the lead at the NCAA men's golf regional at Omni Tucson National.

The UA has a three-stroke lead over North Carolina State and first-round leader Florida (555) .

The Wildcat surge was led by junior Henry Liaw, who shot a 6-under 66. He was tied for 22nd at 4-under 140.

"I did really well today," Liaw said in a news release. "I came out playing like I wanted, and started off under par and finished in a good position."

Other UA players and their scores: Josh Esler, 138, tied for 10th; Ben Fox and Brian Prouty, 139, tied for 17th; and Travis Esway, 143, tied for 48th.

"We played really well today," said UA coach Rick LaRose in a news release. "I'm feeling good about where we are right now. Henry came back ... and had a stellar performance. ... Everyone did really well." The individual leader after two rounds was Dustin Pimm of Utah at 10-under 134.

Also playing in the tourney is Tucson native Josh Escobedo of Loyola Marymount.

Leaving the LMU campus a few days before the rest of the golf team, Escobedo planned a trip home to Arizona to surprise his mom, Diane, for Mother's Day.

Step two of his plan was to finish in the top 15 in this weekend's tournament.

Escobedo, 20, is a 2004 Salpointe Catholic graduate who walked on at LMU and has become an All-West Coast Conference golfer -- with a partial scholarship -- in two years.
