LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The LMU men's golf program has become one of the top programs in the West Coast Conference thanks in large part to talented players right in the Lions' backyard. Head Coach Alex Galvan continues to pluck top talent from southern California, announcing that Bryan Bergna (Riverside Poly HS) and Boris Stantchev (Woodrow Wilson HS) have signed National Letters of Intent to play golf and attend LMU beginning in the fall.

In the 2008-09 season, the entire LMU roster was made of players within 70 miles of the LMU campus. That will continue with the addition of Bergna and Stantchev, whose paths have crossed through the years on the high school and summer.

"Southern California has so many talented players, LMU is such a great place to be, and is so close to some of the best golf courses around, it is a perfect fit to recruit players in our backyard," said Galvan. "We have some great players from local high schools the last several years, and Boris and Bryan will continue that. They had great high school careers and will be good additions to our roster."

Both Bergna and Stantchev played against each other at the CIF/SCGA South Regional Championship the last several years, including this past June 4 at SCGA Golf Course in Murrieta. Bergna, whose brother Louie Bergna played for the Lions on the 2006 WCC Championship team, finished with a 68 and a tie for fifth place to earn a bid to the 2009 CIF/CGA Boys' Golf Championship. One-stroke behind Bergna was his future teammate, Stantchev, with a three-under 69. It was one-stroke shy of making the state tournament.

Bergna went on to post a 74 at the State Championship held at Poppy Hills Golf Course on June 10.

In 2008, the duo faced off once again, as Stanchev finished in a tie for 35th with a 73 and Bergna finished in a tie for 58th with a 75. As a sophomore, Stanchev was second at the Southern Regional with a 68 and advanced to the state tournament at Poppy Hills Golf Course as a sophomore and finished tied for 13th.

In his senior season, Stantchev was the team leader for Wilson. He took individual medal honors in over half of the team's league matches, leading the Bruins to an undefeated season. He went on to earn team MVP honors and as a sophomore was the Long Beach Press Telegram Golfer of the Year.

For Bergna, in addition to his stellar high school career, which included a pair of All-CIF selections, he was active on the Southern California PGA Junior Tour. He played in 16 events in 2007 and nine in 2008. This past fall he had his best finish, winning the Toyota Tour Cup Series - Sycuan at Sycuan Resort in Oak Glenn, shooting a two round 138, including a 68 in the final round.
