SEASON PREVIEW: Challenging Goals Start in New York
Men's golf hopes to challenge all season as season begins at famous Bethpage Golf Course on Friday.
Sept. 13, 2012
LOS ANGELES - The 2012-13 season will begin for the LMU men's golf team with a trip across the country to one of the more famous courses in the country as the Lions start the new campaign at The McLaughlin hosted by St. John's University at Bethpage Golf Course Sept. 15-16.
The Lions will mix youth with experience as they enter the 2012-13 season. Junior Tyler Torano and senior Bryan Bergna, who finished one-two for the Lions last season, will be the experienced leaders for a roster that has three seniors, a junior and five underclassmen.
"We are excite to get on a plane and start the season at a place as historic as Bethpage," said Torano, who led the Lions with a pair of individual championships and a 73.3 stroke average in 2011-12. "We have a roster that will really challenge each other to be better. Everyone on this team wants to travel and be one of the five who play in the tournaments. That competition will really make us better and I think we have a group that is very capable of winning the West Coast Conference."
Torano, who played in the U.S. Amateur Championship in August, led the Lions with 12 rounds under par and six top-20 finishes a year ago. He was followed very closely by the senior Bergna, who was second on the team with a 73.6 stroke average and had nine rounds under par.
The other two seniors on the roster are Eduardo Chavez and Boris Stantchev. Chavez and Stantchev both played 30 rounds last season and finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in stroke average. Stantchev has played in 77 rounds as a Lion and had a 77.7 stroke average, while Chavez has played in 51 and hit 76.9 last season.
Sophomores Tyler Little and Spencer Rowley also return to the Lions roster and are two of the five underclassmen. Joining the Lions this season are true freshman Connor Campbell, Chase Nicolai and Cole Young.
Campbell and Nicolai will both make the opening trip on the season, joining Torano, Bergna and Chavez as the five playing at The McLaughlin.
Their will be 16 teams in the field at the McLaughlin, which will be played at Bethpage's Red Course (par-70, 7,014 yards). The field includes Auburn, Bethune-Cookman, Binghamton, Columbia, Darthmouth, Florida Southern, Harvard, Hosfstra, Johnson & Wales, Louisville, Marquette, Princeton, Temple, West Florida, and host St. Johns.
The Lions will tee-off with a practice round on Friday and then be paired with Florida Southern, Princeton and Temple starting on the first tee at 8:40 a.m. (5:40 a.m. PT) for the first round on Saturday. The teams will play 36 holes on Saturday followed by the final 18 on Sunday.
