Sept. 3, 2004
OMAHA, Neb. - The Loyola Marymount men's soccer team opened its season with a 2-2 tie against Southwest Missouri State (SMS) in the first game of the Diadora Challenge hosted by Creighton University. The Lions opened the game with a 2-0 lead in the 14th minute, but the Bears answered in the 19th minute, and tied it up in the second half. Neither team could score in the two 10-minute overtime periods and the game ended in a tie. It was a very physical game, as three red cards (two for LMU, one for SMS) and eight yellow cards were issued.
Jimmy Burling scored the first LMU goal of the season at 7:57 off of an assist from Diego Souza and Bobby Burling. The Lions added a second goal at 13:24 as Danny Williams headed in a free kick from Armando Melendez. The Bears quickly answered with a goal of their own at 18:16, gathering the ball after it rebounded off of LMU goalkeeper Shaun Kalnasy. LMU held a 2-1 lead until 56:49 when SMS's Jon Watson blasted a shot from 35 yards out that went past the diving Kalnasy.
The game-tying goal came just minutes after Jimmy Burling was ejected from the game with a red card at 54:49. SMS lost its man-advantage at 77:49 when Ryan Anderson was ejected with a red card, but LMU's Matt Kovar was ejected with a red card at 85:30, and the Lions played a man-down for the final 4:30 of regulation and both overtime periods.
SMS outshot LMU 23-11, as the Lions managed just five shots on goal. Freshman Diego Barrera had two shots for LMU, as did Williams. Kalnasy made five saves in the tie. Doug Lacody led the Bears with nine shots, while goalkeeper Nathan Platz made three saves for SMS.
LMU (0-0-1) will play host Creighton on Sunday at 5:30pm PDT to complete play in the Diadora Challenge. The Bears (0-0-1) will take on Western Michigan on Sunday.
