Lions Drop Season Opener
Despite outshooting Illinois-Chicago 19-6, the Lions fall, 2-0.

IRVINE, Calif. --- The 24th-ranked Loyola Marymount men's soccer team dropped its season opener to Illinois-Chicago, 2-0, in the opening game of the UC Irvine College Classic presented by DoubleTree Hotel - Orange County Airport at Anteater Stadium Saturday night.
Despite outshooting the Flames 19-6, the Lions could not capitalize on their opportunities. LMU held a 12-1 shot advantage in the second half, and made 10 shots on goal to Illinois-Chicago's three. Armando Melendez led all players with four shots in the game, while Bobby Burling and Trini Gomez each had three shots.
The Flames' Pavle Dundjer assisted on both goals as Tonci Skroce scored in the 39th minute and Cesar Zambrano in the open field with 16 seconds left in the game.
Goalkeeper Jeff Engelbrecht recorded nine saves for Illinois-Chicago while Robert Flores had one for the Lions.
Several Lions made their debut in LMU jerseys this evening. Transfer midfielder Gomez suited up in the LMU uniform after two years at UCLA, and freshmen Alex Proano, Garrett Maloney and Jawaan Delaney all made their first appearance for the Lions.
Illinois-Chicago faces UC Irvine at 1:00 p.m. Monday and Loyola Marymount plays North Florida at 11:00 that morning.
