LMU broke a scoreless match on Sarkis Shaginian's first goal of the season in the 77th minute at Sacramento State on Sunday evening, but the Hornets (2-3-0) would get the equalizer in the final minute of regulation to force overtime, and would eventually earn the match-winner on a penalty kick with less than 10 seconds left in the first overtime period, handing the Lions (1-4-1) a 2-1 setback.
While both teams had a few chances to get on the board in the first half, LMU and Sacramento State found themselves still searching for a goal late into the second. LMU, which finished the match having taken 12 corner kicks, made the most of their eighth of the contest, as Rodrigo San Roman delivered a perfect ball to the foot of an unmarked Shaginian who punched it past James De Curto with ease.

Following a yellow card issued to Gerardo Lopez that would stop the clock with just 49 seconds left in regulation, Justin Bedig took a free kick from 40 yards out that lofted toward the back post, was deflected back toward the middle of the six-yard box, and scissor-kicked home by Sac State's Mac Harrington to tie the game.
Now playing in overtime, LMU was attempting to stave off one final chance from Sacramento State in the first overtime period as the home team took a corner with 22 seconds left to tick away. After the corner kick cleared the goal frame and was run down by a Hornet player on the opposite side, Sacramento State's attacker dribbled through two Lion defenders and was taken down on a slide tackle in the box, handing Sac State a penalty. Trevor Jackson stepped to the spot and promptly punched the shot just out of the reach of Collin Partee, who made seven saves in the loss, to put an end to the contest.
LMU is scheduled to play two matches in Florida next week, but in the wake of Hurricane Irma, the contests are in question. LMU would visit Florida Gulf Coast on Friday at 4 p.m. before visiting USF on Sunday at 4 p.m. Check back to LMULions.com for the latest information regarding the schedule.
