Lions Remain Undefeated in WCC Action
LMU ties St. Mary's on a last minute goal by Matt Kovar.

MORAGA, Calif. - The Loyola Marymount men's soccer team remained undefeated in WCC play, securing a 1-1 tie with St. Mary's this afternoon in Moraga, Calif. Matt Kovar tied the game with less than three minutes in regulation to force overtime. Neither team scored in the two 10 minute periods, and the game ended in a tie. LMU moves to 5-3-3, 3-0-1 on the season, while St. Mary's records its fifth tie of the year to improve to 2-3-5, 0-1-2.
Saint Mary's jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Adam Zielske drilled a shot from the top of the penalty box past LMU goalkeeper Shaun Kalnasy. At the 11:07 mark of the contest, Zielske took a pass from freshman James Collin just outside the penalty box, took one dribble then fired the right-footed shot into the back left corner of the goal.
Saint Mary held the 1-0 lead until late in the game before Kovar evened the scored at 1-1 with 2:31 remaining in regulation. Kovar took the ball in a scramble, found an opening, then beat a diving SMC keeper, Brian Mason, low and left for the game-tying goal.
Saint Mary's had multiple opportunities to extend its lead, but the LMU defense was there to stop the Gaels on three scoring opportunities. Midway through the first half Alex Christlieb's header off a Diego Rovira corner kick was played off the goal line by a LMU defensive field player.
In the second half, Christlieb and Rovira connected on another corner kick, but Kalnasy face got in the way Christlieb's header. SMC's third opportunity to put the game out of reach, Joaquin Jaime missed a left footed volley off a cross from Anthony Butler.
The Lions play their final non-conference game next Friday as they head east to play Wake Forest at 4:00pm PDT. They come back to Southern California on Sunday to face #4 Santa Clara at 3:00pm at Sullivan Field.
