Los Angeles, CA - #10 Santa Clara scored two goals in the second half to spoil LMU Senior Day this afternoon in WCC men's soccer action at Sullivan Field. Keith Devey gave the Broncos a 1-0 lead in the 69th minute and Jide Ogunbiyi added an insurance goal in the 87th minute for the win. LMU outshot SCU 20-13 but came up short in its final home game of the season. The Lions remain in second place in the WCC and will head to San Francisco next Sunday to wrap up the regular season.
LMU came out on fire to open the game, riding the emotions from the pregame ceremony that honored the eight members of the senior class. The Lions passed the ball well and had several outstanding opportunities in the opening minutes but couldn't capitalize. LMU outshot SCU 12-6 for the period but both goalkeeper made three saves to keep the game scoreless.
The Broncos finally broke the scoreless tie in the 69th minute. Devey launched a shot from 27 yards out to the far post that beat LMU goalkeeper Robert Flores.
SCU added an insurance goal in the 87th minute. Ogunbiyi received the ball at midfield, and touched the ball behind the LMU defense. He outran his defenders and beat Flores on a one-on-one opportunity from 18 yards out to put the game away for the Broncos.
LMU started all eight members of its senior class in Sunday's home finale and they played admirably. Diego Souza led all players with four shots, while Bobby Burling and Adam Sloustcher added three shots each. Brian Martin led SCU with four shots.
Flores finished the day with three saves in his final home game, and SCU goalkeeper Joseph Buttitta made four saves. Each team had a goal line save by its defense.
The Lions remain in second place in the WCC with a 5-4-2 record (17 points) and sit one point ahead of San Diego (16 points). San Francisco sits in fourth place with 15 points. The Dons will host both San Diego and LMU this weekend to wrap up the regular season. Santa Clara wraps up the WCC title with the win today, securing the three points to move to 23 points on the season.
