Lions Blank Tigers
Three different Lions scored while Paul Blanchette recorded his seventh shutout of the year.
STOCKTON, Calif. - Three different Lions found the back of the net Sunday afternoon as the LMU men’s soccer team blanked West Coast Conference rival Pacific, 3-0, at Knoles Field.
Griffin Bell provided the eventual game-winner in the 44th minute, while Alvaro Madrigal and Akio Ohtake-Gordon added second-half goals for the Lions, who improve to 8-8-0 overall and 3-2-0 in WCC play.
Paul Blanchette made a pair of saves in goal on his way to his seventh shutout of the season, tying his own LMU single-season record set during the 2013 season.
Bell got things going for the Lions just inside the halftime break, heading a corner kick cross from Luc Brubaker into the far post netting.
Madrigal doubled up the LMU lead in the 50th minute with his WCC leading eighth goal of the season. Following a long Blanchette goal kick, Madrigal won possession just inside the Tigers’ half. He carried the ball up the center of the field, then cracked a shot from 25 yards out into the lower right netting.
Ohtake-Gordon provided the final three-goal spread with his first score of the season. Once again, the scoring play began in the Lion back field with a Blanchette goal kick. On the counter, James Tanaka found John Bovill and Bovill passed to a streaking Ohtake-Gordon who beat Pacific goalkeeper Josh Adachi.
LMU returns to Sullivan Field for the final time this season on Sunday, Nov. 8, hosting WCC rival Santa Clara. The Lions’ senior class will be honored in a brief ceremony prior to the 1 p.m. kick off.
