LOS ANGELES - Tying their highest scoring output of the season, the LMU men's soccer team earned a crucial 4-1 win over visiting Gonzaga Sunday at Sullivan Field.

Coupled with a 2-1 Santa Clara win over Saint Mary's and a 2-1 Portland win over San Diego, the WCC victory keeps the Lions (7-10-1, 5-4-1 WCC) in the hunt for a second consecutive league title with two games remaining. Updated WCC standings through Sunday's matches includes St. Mary's in first with 17 points and LMU, USD, SCU and Portland tied for second with 16 points each.

The Lions showed no ill effects of Friday's disappointing 3-1 loss to Portland as they were able to take a 1-0 lead less than two minutes in when a Gonzaga defender was called for a foul inside the box, awarding LMU a penalty kick. Artur Jozkowicz converted the PK for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Gonzaga evened the score 1-1 in the 10th minute when Clark Phillips took a pass from Nathanael Pacheco and buried a shot into the top right corner of the net.

LMU took the lead back at the 25-minute mark when David Ponce scored off a blocked shot by Alex Greenman.

Carrying the momentum into the second half, LMU added goals in the 57th and 67th minutes and finished with 27 total shots to the Bulldogs' 13.

The Lions' third goal was courtesy of Fernando Barba, who tallied his second goal of the season off a pass from John McFarlin. Dylan Seedman added the final goal of the match off a double assist from McFarlin and Ponce.

LMU goalkeeper Jack McCormack finished with four saves before giving way to Billy Thompson for the final three minutes of play.

The Lions return to Sullivan Field on Wednesday for a WCC showdown against San Diego. Kick off for the home finale is scheduled for 2 p.m. The match will be preceded by a brief ceremony honoring the senior class of 2011.
