LOS ANGELES - The Lions' six-game win streak was snapped in heartbreaking fashion Sunday afternoon as visiting Gonzaga scored with 1:47 remaining in double overtime to send LMU's men's soccer team to a 1-0 West Coast Conference defeat at Sullivan Field.
LMU falls to 11-4-2 overall and 7-2-1 in the WCC with its first home loss of the year. The Zags improve to 9-5-3 overall and 4-3-3 in league play.
The Lions still hold a slim lead in the race for the WCC title, sitting in first with 22 points. Santa Clara, a 2-1 winner over San Francisco Sunday, moves to within a point of LMU at 21 points. Both teams have two games remaining, including a head-to-head match-up at Santa Clara on Friday, Nov. 15.
Despite a slow offensive start for both sides, the Lions began to pick up their pace, and connect better in the final third as the game wore on. They held a 9-5 shot advantage in the first half, an 11-3 lead in the second and finished the match with a 26-10 shot advantage over the Zags.
Time and time again late in the match, however, potential game-winning goals were turned away by Gonzaga goalkeeper Ryan Caballero, who finished with a dozen saves.
With all of the momentum heading into extra time, Caballero turned away a header by Dylan Seedman and a rocket shot by Pedro Velazquez in the first overtime period, sending the teams past the 100-minute mark.
Seedman had the first look in the second overtime period, but again Caballero was there for the save. Adrien Perez sent his sixth shot of the day just high at the 107:27 mark for LMU's last opportunity.
The Zags countered as Clark Phillips worked the ball down the center of the field, then sent a left-footed ball towards the right post for Nick Hamer, who headed it into the near post netting at 108:13.
LMU returns to Sullivan Field for the final time this season on Wednesday, Nov. 13, hosting San Diego at 6 p.m. LMU Athletics is offering the "We've got your back" promotion.
