Nov. 20, 2004
Los Angeles, Calif. - Junior Danny Williams scored his first game-winning goal of the season to lead Loyola Marymount men's soccer (11-7-3) to the 1-0 NCAA first round victory over Cal State Northridge (11-6-2) at Sullivan Field Saturday afternoon. LMU goalkeeper Robert Flores had three key saves for his fifth shutout of the season.
The 1-0 first round win sends the Lions to the second round of the NCAA Championship for the third straight year. LMU will now face top-10 UCLA Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. on the Bruin campus.
Cal State Northridge out-shot LMU 7-0 in the first half, but Flores anchored the Lions defensively with three key saves in the first.
LMU came out strong from the halftime break, turning the second half into a mirror image of the first. The Lions out-shot CSUN 7-1 to set up the game's only goal. LMU got on the board with a header inside the box by Williams (72:42) off Junior Ybarra's free kick.
"I thought we did a great job of keeping possession in the second half until we scored a goal," LMU Head Coach Paul Krumpe said. "We were very evenly matched teams and were fortunate to have this game here at home."
